In addition to be a great 20th century French cellist, Paul Tortelier (1914-1990) was also a promising composer particularly for his instrument. His prominent works included a double cello concerto, a solo suite, two sonatas and this Elegy among others.
He composed the Elegy for cello and piano in 1937 and dedicated it to his cello teacher Louis R. Feuillard (1872-1941). Şölen and Yeşim Dikener published its world premiere recording in 1998 in the USA.
