Here we explore my system for decoding the phrasing of african decent music, RTS - Relayed Time shifting
To get the proper feel of this music, western players must learn to do this. Without the proper feel, Your playing sounds sterile and 1 dimensional.

    Hi Upbeat...Its not metric modulation really. This is about accessing the vocabulary of 6/8 and transferring it to the music. If you try to do the phrasing with out thinking this way its impossible. This system basically is ear training so that you can hear the vocabulary properly. Hope that helps.

  • nice, im 15 and i have been getting into brazilian/ jazz/ afro cuban, and i am starting to really understand it, i think it has its own language, alphebet, formulas, and this will help me continue on to be as good as you.

  • So that's why the basic afro-cuban pattern fits over everything! It's actually fitting UNDER everything...

    This approach explains so much about how indigenous Timbale players can play mind trips like triplet figures over cut time cascara patterns - It's not triplets at all, it's a shift to 6/8! This idea of blending cut time and 6/8 and the way it's presented are revolutionary (at least to me). Thanks for this video! I needed it, and it's already changed the way I think about time.

    Thats right! Eventually this system allows your ears to adjust to the vocabulary. Making life a lot easier when you play this type of music.

  • Fantastic. Thanks for this - I have been a drum student at Berklee for 5 semesters and haven't heard this detailed of an explanation about the connection between cut time and 6/8 in Afro Cuban music! Great!

  • most culture's utilize the interplay between 4 beat and 6 beat cycles, the irish and native americans, Indians and Indonesians come to mind. I think the Indian's do it the best though by just playing in a 12 beat cycle that combines the two rather than in 6 or 4 - longer phrases.

  • Wow, this video is extremely helpful. I've yet to completely wrap my head around feeling both 6/8 and cut together and separately... and playing them both ways. Playing that clave feel under your solo was mind-blowing, I hope to have that coordination and comfort one day.
