Err, actually there are 3 books!
And also it should be apparent that since it is based on the novels - as opposed to a complete facsimile of it, that the writing team have enough scope to spin it out into a further 4 seasons with the material at hand.
As far as Doakes gettin topped i concerned - aint gonna happen. Lila is gonna get killed in the final episode. The title "The British Invasion" says it all really!

Nope doakes wont be killed, otherwise there would be no reason in having dexter dumping that evidence in the water (Sneak Peek #2). He will be framed, i am sure of it.

To clear the air, Dexter has become such a powerhouse hit that if they had a 3rd season, the show would not lose its fan base. Yes, the books are important, but the show can stand alone, without the book. A season 3 could be based on LaGuerda learning of Doakes theory after he is convicted, and she also becomes infatuated with following Dexter. Lila could also be following Dexter, and discover his secret.

The first season finished airing on December 17, 2006. On November 2, 2006, Showtime renewed the series for a second season which began shooting on May 21, 2007 and premiered on September 30, 2007. Showtime President Robert Greenblatt has confirmed a third season is planned.[1]
