I can still see my dad singing this 3 sheets to the wind lol

This is first. Then I'd have to say Doc Watson is next. Then Bill Monroe..I haven't yet listened to Thorogood's version. Doc Watson's version is phenomenal though, if you can find it.

This is definitely Roscoe Holcomb, not Clarence Ashley.

honestly can't tell 'em apart since you've pointed it out..

am i really the first person to point out that this is clarence ashley, not roscoe holcomb? really?

That is what was formerly known as a fast thumb-brush strum. A real nail grinder on a steel string acoustic but he don't seemed to mind much.

Best version of this song. George thorogood is a distant second.

I´ve been looking for Leadbellys´ version.....But I can´t find it?
Any ideas...

This song is a nightmare.

@mandolinman2006 Hi, two years on - its a Harmony Sovereign H1260 circa 1960 made in Chicago. Solid one piece back, book matched Spruce top and ladder braced internals, finished in shellac (French Polish) Jumbo size and famous for its deep tone.
I always thought Ralph Stanley's voice captured the essence of all that had came and gone in the mountians of the south but after listening to Roscoe, I'd say Ralph has an equal.
