Using the USGI Protractor as a scale, angle finder and angle converter. Also covers customizing the protractor with tape and string, the inconvenience of carrying it around in the field and so on.

  • Fits great in your cargo pocket, or in the "map flap" on your ALICE pack. Theses were made pre-MOLLE (and yes, the military does need to upgrade)

  • @jimmyggh1 I've never found a pocket they fit in, even on BDU. Maybe my pants are tiny? Clearly, Big Army considers it a Graphic Training Aid, so it just has to work in a classroom. Too bad.

  • i do the toltal oppisite i put the right side of the protractor on the point the wherever the grid spare is on the map on the left side we get the other 2 coordinates by the number at the bottom is that any diffrent from what u just did

  • @Sgtturtle22 Not sure I followed this right. Can you show me a photo or something? I don't want to mislead everyone more than I already am :)

  • Why did you take a vertical reading from the top line instead of the bottom line? I thought everything went left to right and bottom to top. I believe the reading for easting is correct of 375, but the reading for northing is wrong. Correct me if I am wrong.

  • @cassidykk Huh... I was taught this, and just don't use the protractor much, so hadn't noticed until you said it, and I grabbed a map and did the logic. Yup, it's wrong. Drat.

I'll add a note momentarily to the video, since I'll be traveling for a while and won't be able to do videos and stuff.

  • Always start with the zero on the lower left quadrant of the grid square your working with and move that to the right and then read up where the protractor intersects your location. Your initial coordinates will be the original grid square number (bottom of map, lower left quadrant) plus the two digits that intersect that point on the protractor plus the grid square (reading UP..left side of map) + 2 #'s vertical on protractor that intersect with your location on map)..remember...RIGHT and UP

  • Great explanation of it's use also!
