The only problem anywhere to be found is the false belief that you are at the mercy of your life, and the only solution is the truth of your nature, which is everywhere and always present and self-evident. Ridding oneself of the false is as easy as repeatedly tasting the truth of being here, unmovingly, unchangingly here. This repeated looking directly at oneself is the infallible method of the vichara.

John Sherman

John Shermans work is to teach the method of the vichara to all who are interested.

Like everybody else, John spent his life unconsciously searching for the one perfect path out of the wilderness of human life; the one perfect idea, the one perfect thing to think, to understand, to want, to have, to believe, to become that would bring him salvation and satisfaction. The course of Johns search was extreme compared to most, but the result was the same: nothing worked, nothing ever does.

Late in 1975, when he was 33 years old, John discovered the perfect idea of perfect Social Justice, set out to become the perfect Communist revolutionary, joined with a small group of anarcho-communist radicals, and embarked upon four years of bank robberies, bombings, gunfights with the police, two escapes from federal prisons and two years on the FBIs Ten Most Wanted List; all done in the name of supporting the struggles of the American worker for justice. In the end it came to nothing.

In January of 1976, he was shot and captured during a bank robbery; in March, he escaped.

In 1978, after two years on the run, robbing banks and organizing bombings, John was captured by the FBI, tried, convicted, and sentenced to 30 years in prison.

In March of 1979, he escaped again from the federal prison where he was serving his sentence. In April of 1981, after two years on the FBIs Ten Most Wanted list, he was finally captured for the last time and returned to prison.

In June of 1994, in the fifteenth year of his imprisonment, the American spiritual teacher Gangaji came to the prison where John was serving his sentence. John found himself face to face with her and, in that meeting, discovered himself to be eternally and unconditionally free. Three and a half years later, in 1998, he was released on parole.

Upon his release, John moved to Boulder, Colorado. John met Carla in Boulder and they were married in June of 1999, in San Rafael, California. In 2001, John and Carla moved to Ojai, California, where they live with their cat, Switters. In August of 2007, John was released from parole.

Since 1999, John offers guidance in the practice of the vichara, and encourages people to seek only the simple truth of their actual nature. John speaks from his experience, listens to reports, and answers questions. All meetings and events with John are always free of charge. All are welcome, with no regard for religious and spiritual beliefs or practices.

  • Words are difficult to use to describe the Self. The only way to bridge the paradox is to see the self.......for yourself. Upon seeing this, all of the confusion about the apparent paradox dissolves. You will see that there is no need to fix or fret over what isn't even real. There is no need to stress over what is not even happening.

You will see what is 'real' with a little r, and you will see what is 'REAL' with a big R. Who you are -The Self- Is the REAL thing. Self is forever.

  • What annoys me about John Sherman is that he is always burning spiritual straw men - Setting up imaginary claims branding them spiritual, or Buddhist or Advaitist then then pissing on them with a self righteous superior insight. For instance he sais. The idea of grabbing ego by the throat is a sin, is heracy to Advaititsts or Buddhist and advanced spiritual teachings etc. this is total rubbish.

he means to search the sense of "I" inside of you and keep looking at it, which is yourself. find inside yourself what is the most "you" you can find and stay with it.

  • You have the rare privilege of being face to face with a self-realized man and you

interrupt him in the middle of his discourse to show some pretty pictures and listen

to some sentimental music. Of course, nobody is harmed by this absurdity but still...

"The idea of grabbing ego by the throat is a sin, is heracy to Advaititsts or Buddhist and advanced spiritual teachings etc. this is total rubbish."

I think you are right. Stories are rubbish. But ... that's not the point.

  • @davidpeterscqa Or HOW do you 'look at yourself'? In a way you can't because looking AT something is looking outward. Psychological INTROspection would still be looking out in a sense. So 'looking at yourself' is trying to become aware (more clearly and simply aware) of who (or what) it is that is looking. One result may be that you find that this 'I' is not somewhere (inside your body) looking out, but that everything is 'inside' this..this whatever-it-is, this precondition of every phenomenon.
