I've been a big Maria McKee fan since her Lone Justice days, and I think "Life Is Sweet" is her best solo album, but don't like it when she is the sole guitarist in her band. Her singing suffers because she's too busy looking down at her guitar. I know that playing all the guitars was a major accomplishment for her during this phase, but I'd rather see her backed up by a solid lead guitarist. Maria is not Nancy Wilson or P.J. Harvey. She's at her best when she's singing and playing rhythm.

So perfect. There's nothing else to say.

1996 is about the time I saw her in San Diego, when "Life is Sweet" came out. It was a funny time for me. I was stuck in a hotel room with a boombox and some cassettes. Her, Amy Grant, some Dylan. And mid nineties TV. "Melrose Place" "90210" "Allie McBeal" I kind of watched too much girlie TV.
So where is "This Perfect Dress?" Now THAT is a scary, psycho killer type song.

I know it's been two years, but this clip (together with the Absolutely Barking Stars live clip) is from Störsjöyran, Östersund, Sweden 1996.

Maria McKee has been compared to Bowie in that she can reinvent herself. This song, and the CD it was included on was a great departure from her earlier works. I wish the sound was better, but this is great. Thanks so much for posting. This song is absolutely brilliant (well, maybe it ties with Absolutely Barking Stars:).

"I wouldn't trade that work of art for all the silk of perfect skin..." Beautiful.

I had 'You've gotta sin to get saved' and the 'Maria Mckee' and then when I heard this screaming out of Life is Sweet, it was a 'What the hell was that?' moment. Such a swing around from the previous albums and it was absolutely awesome. I had my mind blown. This and Absolutely Barking Stars are my favourite tracks from this album.
