November 30, 2006
BNSF Railway Red Rock Subdivision
Norman, OK

An arctic cold front moved into Oklahoma yesterday, November 29, 2006 bringing an end to the Indian Summer weather that had prevailed over the last few weeks, and a massive arctic air mass has now settled over the region. Now, it's November 30 and this monster winter storm system is bringing heavy snow to most of the state of Oklahoma, with some areas in the northern part of the state receiving as much as a foot of snow. Classes at OU are cancelled due to the weather, and most of the smart people are inside keeping warm with friends/family or watching TV or whatever.

And so, what do I decide to do? Here in Norman, OK, at 6PM, during the worst part of it all, heavy blowing snow is falling and accumulating quickly as a southbound BNSF manifest train drudges southward through the Lexington Avenue grade crossing on the north side of town. The ex-BN loco features a sharp Leslie RS3K horn that carries very well with temperatures in the mid teens and windchills below zero. My fingers and ears loved every minute of it...

This is Part I of the five-part "Central Oklahoma Winter Blast '06" railfanning series.

Train: Southbound Manifest
Time: 6:00 PM CST
Location: Norman, OK @ Lexington Ave
Motive Power: BNSF 8039 (ex-BN SD40-2) & CSXT SD40-2 (road no. unidentifiable)

  • Awesome nothing but awesome. Thanks for standing there in the cold to get this video to share with us all. Thanks.

  • @steve7112004 Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. As miserably cold as I was at the time, it was well worth it to get the footage. I just wish I had used the tripod in retrospect. This past January we had some really good snow here in Oklahoma for the first time in recent years, and my camera was unfortunately out of commission (and still is), so I wasn't able to capture the winter scene this year. Thanks for viewing and commenting.

  • This crossing seems to have somthing different about it when ever you shoot it. like in 1 video, it had mechanicle bells. in this one, e-bells.

  • The crossing used to have a mechanical bell up until around the time this video was shot in November 2006, when it was replaced by the e-bell. Other than that, not really anything else has changed about this crossing. Some of my newer uploads of this crossing are from back when the mechanical bell was still there.

  • E bells suck

  • damn we need those gates up here in traverse city michingan! we dont get much rail action but when we do the stupid ass drivers who think trains never come thru here dont pay attention to the lights and cross right before the train passes
