The bear was never completely eradicated, but were persecuted so severely that it finally remained only in small areas in some of the country's most remote areas. In 1930 there were around 130 or so bears left in Sweden. After the closed and strict hunting quotas in the decades since then, so bear population has grown substantially.
In 2008, researchers estimated that there are approximately 3200 bears in Sweden. Most north of an imaginary line between the northern Värmland and Uppland. All indications suggest, however, now that the bear is spreading south.
