To each his own, I was at the last Led Zeppilin show before Plants' sons' death.
1977 at the King Dome in Seattle. I was already a veteran of 3 shows by then but I tell ya, I've not since seen any band that effected me in this way and I was totally sober.
After hearing Plant sing that time I was able to quit smoking and create a little musical career of my own.
To say Jimmy Page is sloppy or less than inspirational, sounds like a frustrated younger guitar player who needs his diapers changed

@robinbourgeois the doubleneck is around 13+ lbs, the heaviest les pauls weigh about 10+ lbs..
-
@johnnyventure I would like to shake your hand.

I was at the October 7th show, 1988. 18,000 people sang Stairway together for him! You can't really hear the crowd singing on this vid, but I'll tell you it was goosebump city!
-
agreed i think the last great rock music was made by the original line up of guns n roses after them came nirvana who basically fucked everything up and now music is like what comes out of your backside total shit lol
-

@MOBRUL3S666 C'mon, Now don't take this the wrong way, I admire Jimmy Page for his work. But, you have to admit he does get a little sloppy when he's drunk or fucked up on drugs. This IS his best performance. But how he plays DOES matter. You can play the best song in the world......but that wouldn't matter because you would play i horribly.
-
this guy can only play this song while his skin shines blue .
-
Let's just call this the....Zepplin technique. :D
-
Say what You want about Page's technique..sloppy or whatever you all bitch about so much..it's live and He is "improvising" like awesome musicians used to do before all this asshole tight, sterile live shit that passes for rock now..all the life sucking Pro Tools era crap. Sloppy or not He's going for it live and as a guitarist..His playing is pure, awesome melody. My opinion of Jimmy Page is.. it's not HOW He plays..it's WHAT He plays.. He's a legend for a reason...

This happens to be one of Jimmy's best live versions - stoned or not.
He at least came in on the lead right and played the first part like the album. He had to give up the last chord on the 12 to get into position for the lead, in other performances he plays the last chord and then misses the first couple of notes.
Its not easy switching necks
Page has a choppy style to begin with - especailly noticable live - but this is a great performance either way.
-
@johnnyventure Yeah, sloppy was part of his style. Zep as a unit was sloppy as they went out on a limb shooting for the stars - sometimes missing (slop) and sometimes creating magical moments that could never be repeated from night to night.
-
Remember he was still on Dope at this time, not bad for some one on that shit.

HugoJanKanAI is absolutely correct about Pages commitment in the studio. He was notorious for working extremely long hours perfectly Zeppelins tracks, and he would dub and overdub his own playing, restructure the solo until it was to his liking etc. It was an obsession of his, and it is what made Zeppelins sound so rich and powerful, so much so that their albums sound fresh even today. It simply cannot be replicated live, and why would anyone want that? He always improvised live.
-
Where is this from? ARMS Concert, right? Thanks.
Sloppy? Bullshit! He wrote it! He can play it anyway he damn well pleases! Hell, he usually was trying to create the sound of his guitar overdubbed up to 4 times on the record. He was tight!!!!
Having seen LZ 4 times I was wowed each time in indescribable ways. I am a multi-instrumentalist myself BTW.

Sloppy? Listen to the albums, you'll notice there are lots of layers of guitar. Jimmy often tried to play a live summary of all these layers without losing any part of the song. It's not an easy task, and I implore you to try. Adding to that, I'd like to say that IMO live performances need a bit of freedom to play a bit of impro. That's the heart of playing music. But it will deviate from the album. But it's true that Jimmy did some crappy shows when fucked up.
However, this one wasn't sloppy.
