by arching the back you recruit more of the lower pec into the lift by making your body closer to a decline bench position. look at how much weight you put up in decline bench compared to flat bench.... thats why if your struggling with a rep you toss up your back and pound that sucker out.

@iLyRetro Not really, arching you back is a common power lifting technique for the bench press. And there's no downward pressure on the spine because its a supported movement by the flat bench...
