By this time Ray had switched to the Sterno label, which was only available through the dept store chain Marks and Spencer. His hotel band,in London's Bloomsbury district had no brass section and so players were drafted in on ad hoc basis. This track has Nat Gonella playing and singing. The fine baritone sax is Chester Smith, with Rudy Starita on drums. After 40 secs the band really get going and has a great, hot, ride out after the Gonella scat vocal.

  • Sorry to have missed this gem. Hearing it persuaded me to listen to a selection of his post Columbia recordings. Too many to list but "Goofus" and "I heard" are like this crazy song, simply outstanding.

  • @jackpaynefan Yes,some very fine music indeed.Thank heavens the Staritas decided to come to our shores in the 1920s.They left us a lot of decent records.
