Here is a rare example of the Ability of the western Electric System. It was recorded in a sound deaden room with no low pass filter. Thus capturing the full sound range up to the 15KHz. As Victor experiment more the engineers started recording with Pre-emphasis to maximize sound reproducing in the orthophonic players. This meant higher lows even higher mids ranges and minimized highs. And now I compare to modern recordings so I always have a base to create the EQ levels which now I can do almost by hear now.

  • What is it about slide whistles that fascinated people in the 1920s so much?

  • Wonderful transfer! What a pity that the combination of the new technology and changing musical tastes rendered the "Dixieland Fives" obsolete right about this time in favor of more cumbersome, heavily arranged jazz. Glad that the group waxed four electrics for Columbia and two for Victor in 1925!

  • Interesting that Bass Ale was known to Americans i the twenties...

  • Thankyou for the trip back in time......Julie
