This is our first attempt on grafting citrus. We were trying to graft tangerine and calamondin (kalamansi) scions onto a strong lemon tree. We did it at winter time realizing best timing is at spring time but we can't wait. So we'll see how it progresses.

  • Can you please post an update on the tree?

  • @rzvordog I posted a progress report below. We had a deep freeze during the winter and the entire tree froze and dried up. So the grafts did not have a chance.

  • did it work already sir?

  • @stephentorogi I posted the progress report below.

  • Texas had unusually cold winter. We had several days of deep freeze. So non of grafts made it. Even the native twigs and trunks dried up. I'll probably have to prune the whole tree to half the original size.

The lesson to learn here is wait 'til spring to do some grafts.

  • We'll have to wait 'til spring if buds will come out. I'll post a comment on results.

  • calamondin is also known as cumquat

  • You remind me myself. So intense about grafting the first time. You might want to change the tape to clear plastic. That duck tape probably have a poison electrical coating that is not favorable to the plant cells. Have fun. I finally just purchase some new fruit trees.

  • Sorry its not going to work ..they always dry out ..you can try to cover the grafts with plastic for 3 to 4 weeks and leave the tape on till the branches get leaves. I cut the tree back like you did an grafted the new branches as they reach about 1/4 inch dia.

  • Was it succesful? I never seen a method like that.
