Translation:
With a dropper, they have found traces of uterine stem cells in women of child-bearing age. They made that discovery three months ago, and are since then seeking funds to continue this research line, which is unique in the world.
These cells produce a number of substances that can have therapeutic effects, particularly as an anti-inflammatory, and they can become real medicine factories, which creates a lot of hope and opens a new horizon in regenerative research and medicine, says doctor and researcher Francisco Vizoso, head of the Research Unit at Jove Hospital.
They have found in test tubes that these stem cells, as well as having the capacity of reproducing themselves more than other kinds of cells, also have the capacity to transform themselves into any kind of tissue, including neurones.
They investigate with in vitro growths of uterine stem cells taken from female mice and also from women. They have taken over 200 samples from women of Gijón during their gynaecologic revision at Jove Hospital.
The next step is investigation with animals, and the last stage is clinical trials with human patients, but we will have to wait at least four years for that.
According to the results we are obtaining and also the experiments we are carrying out, we could have one or several target-illnesses, assured Naomi Eiró, researcher.
They have an inkling the products derived from these uterine stem cells could become new medicines for illnesses such as Alzheimers, rheumatoid arthritis and cancer.
At this time, the possibilities of the pharmaceutical industry are exhausted, and we can see no chances of obtaining more drugs from algae or plants, so this is a new and very promising possibility, says Francisco Vizoso.
They dont know yet if they will succeed, but they say the failure would be not to try, at least; it would be a pity.
