The pride isn't based on anything real - that's my point. That's like being proud of someone else's business, or a failing business that you own - it means nothing. All one can say as this generation is that they were born here - if they steer the destiny of the country i.e. generate wealth, promote society, build community, help charities - that warrants pride.

The kind of "pride" you describe however, is like a football fan - he appeals to the past achievements of others without taking part.

Strange how you claim to respect my comments and then say they are full of shit. Britain is all about past glory - that's my point. We have weak manufacturing, no housing, and a right wing political climate where the rich have the public blaming immigrants, the poor and the disabled for the economic crisis. Now we have nationalists winning widespread public support. Sorry dude, it sucks here. As a Canadian you may not be able to relate to our everyday domestic concerns.

"Patriotism" is simply nationalism with the cult of self-sacrifice and martyrdom. The whole "Rule Britannia" thing is way out of date, and all of this stuff is essentially just indulgent narcissism - i.e. "isn't our country great?"

The Americans do it all the time as well and it pisses me off.

It would be a better use of our time to build the economy and support our people, because I see loads of people saying the UK is great, yet our health and social stats are incredibly poor.

I think this is my favourite version of this last night tradition, humorous, boisterous and definately tongue in cheek. if you want to be a Brit you have to be able to take the pi*s out of yourself cause life is the great cosmic joke, you will never get out alive. enjoy it whilst it lasts. xxx

Hey I'm predominantly left of center and I love this song as it celebrates our naval might and steadfastness against real tyranny in the past. Sure we have/had problems but what nation doesn't. It is completely ok to be proud of a national identity yet hold respect for other nations and cultures and ways of life. Chill my friend. Chill.
