Claudio Chiara is born in Moncalieri (Turin), town where he lives, the11-10-1960. In 1982 he graduated in double bass at the Conservatory of Music"G.Verdi" of Turin with Enzo Ferraris. At the same time he approaches to the jazz music and studies the saxophone as an autodidact. Since 1986 he is the first alto sax in Gianni Basso's big band with which he accompanies famous American musicians as Lee Konitz, Ernie Wilkins etc. and again, always as the leader of the sax' section, he works with several big bands such as l'Orchestra Ritmica della Rai di Milano, the big band del"Paese degli Specchi" of Bologna with which he has played with artists such as George Russel and Kenny Wheeler. In June 2002, together with l'Orchestra Sinfonica della R.S.I.(Radio Svizzera Italiana) at the Estival Jazz of Lugano he played with the vocal group called "New York Voices". In 1992 he plays in the quartet of Tullio De Piscopo and then in the quartet of the double bass player Luciano Milanese. In 2001 Claudio Chiara founds together with his brother Fulvio, trumpeter, and the drummer Gianni Cazzola, the "Bop Quintet" with which he participates in many jazz festivals, such as the "Torino International Jazz Festival", "Ancona Jazz","Camera del Lavoro di Milano", "Festival di Macerata" , "Blue Note" of Milan. In 2002 he participates in the International Competition for Big Band of Barga (Lucca) dedicated to Monk and becomes second in the Section B Original Compositions with his piece entitled "African Song". In June 2003 he plays in the legendary group "Five for Jazz" of the pianist Luigi Bonafede with Pietro Tonolo, Lucio Terzano and Paolo Pellegatti for two concerts dedicated to the great saxophonist Massimo Urbani. In 2004, together with the American singer and pianist Patti Wicks, he records a CD entitled "Basic Feeling", an album that has known favourable consensus, specially in the American press. Since 1995 he is part of the band of the famous Paolo Conte with which he has played in the most important European theatres. In February 2006, always with Conte's band, he performed in a concert on the prestigious stage of "Medal Plazas" of Turin, during the Olympic Winter Games "Torino 2006". He also played with Alvin Queen, Phil Woods, Dusko Gojkovic, Tom Kirckpatrick, Rachel Gould, Patti Wicks, Sagoma Everett, Bob Mover, Benny Baley, Scott Hamilton, Gianni Basso, Luciano Milanese, Tullio De Piscopo, Riccardo Zegna, Andrea Pozza, Franco Cerri, Giampiero Prina, etc

  • Very Nice Playing. I too am a lead alto sax player in a big band here in Western Canada. There is nothing else in the world quite as good as being lead alto in a big band. I am mostly a tenor player but love all saxophones.

    Would love to hear more.
