Aisin-Gioro Pu-Yi, formerly Emperor Xuantong of the Great Qing was returned to his ancestral homeland of Manchuria and on March 1, 1932 was installed as 'Chief Executive' of the Manchu State. In 1934, he was officially enthroned as emperor of the "Great Manchu Empire" with the reign name of Kang Teh (康德). Despite public solidarity he often clashed with the Japanese sponsors of the state. The Emperor's brother, Prince Pu-Chieh was named heir to the throne after his marriage to a Japanese princess. At the end of World War II the Emperor Kang Teh was forced to abdicate as Soviet troops invaded in 1945, after the atomic bombing of Japan.

  • I just saw a documentary recently and did some reading about the life of the last Emperor of China. It was incredible that a person can survive so many changes. He did some terrible things for his country, but himself had been betrayed many times. This has to be one of the most resilient people ever to have lived. I cannot imagine going through such a life. How did he retain his sanity amidst such turmoil with so little preparation for it. Love him or hate him, he was remarkable.
