Terry McAuliffe addresses the York Poquoson Democratic Banquet on 14 May, 2011. As Governor McDonnell bobs around Asia arranging cultural exchanges, McAuliffe discusses what must be done in the emerging economy so that jobs can be created in Virginia. While Defense has been good to the state, even that is at risk with the $78 billion cut Secretary Gates has proposed. The economic base requires diversification. McAuliffe is in the process of moving a manufacturing plant from China to America. He wanted to locate the plant in Virginia, but Virginia would not compete with Mississippi for the facility. Virginia did not compete with Tennessee for a lithium ion battery plant building batteries for Nissan or with South Carolina for the Boeing plant. McAuliffe asks why the Governor of Virginia is not out there drumming up the business that creates those jobs he promised during his campaign.
