This was never an official anthem. It was more of a song expressing (British) patriotism. Although it was popular, particularly with veterans, it was never allowed to become an anthem, mostly because of French Canadian opposition.
I still think we should just have God Save the Queen. O Canada is a bit silly in English. (The lyrics actually make more sense in the French version.)
God Save the Queen (Que Dieu protège la reine), though, is excellent in both languages.

@prussiansoilder Sorry son but "the maple leaf forever" was never our national anthem. It was sung on some occasions and/or O'Canada on an unofficial basis along with God save the King . When I went to school back in the 40's and 50's we always sang "God save the King" later "God save the Queen" in 1980 O'Canada was finally made our official National Anthem. There were a lot of people that thought it should be but it left out Quebec heritage and included Wolfe's victory on the plains of Abram.

this is not the real version, this is the 48th Highlanders doing a medly with Gordon Lightfoot's Alberta Bound in the middle
This was never our original natonal anthem and for obvious reasons. Love the tune but it just did not go over well with Quebec.
