Q: I believe my husband has a substantial amount of cash in his safe deposit box in the bank. Is there anything I can do to protect myself?

A: Yes, when you file the Complaint for Divorce, you can ask the Court for an Order that freezes the safety deposit box. Under certain exceptional circumstances, this being one of them, you can go to Court and ask for this relief, without notifying your spouse. The logic behind that is if the spouse is notified, that spouse will then go running to the bank, will empty the safety deposit box and by the time you get there with the Court Order, everything will be gone. So you would take your Court Order, take it to the bank and the bank will "freeze" that safety deposit box until it can be inventoried at a later date.
