I think the percussionist laughed at the audience response. The audience laughed because bible gum pop is *not* something you expect from RT.

Will Britney be doing any Richard Thompson? I doubt it somehow

That would imply that Britney cared about music other than pop pablum.

I would like to see her cover John Cage's 4'33". I think that would highlight her talents.

That would explain a lot, except there's a faked version of that released by a comedy site. Is that what you've seen?

You weren't the first one to fall for it :-)

Yes, there are songwriters pitching their songs desperately, but if they are good enough record companies... ah wait, let's not forget the 'through publishers or producers' bit... hire them for the job of writing songs (not necessarily have them 'on staff', no, I said 'some').

I can see your point though. But you could just as well say "if you have proven yourself as a hit singer, why do you work for hire and not release your albums yourself?"

Ouch, evidently I fell for a spoof. So record companies have staff writers in this day and age? I would think there are enough songwriters pitching and desperate to get their songs recorded. In fact I know of songwriters giving up a piece of publishing to a non writing hit artist to entice artist to record it, so the idea of staff writers seems an unusual expense. If you already had a track record as a hit writer why would you be working for hire and if you didn't why would they hire you?

Wrong again. The song was written by songwriters/producers Max Martin and Rami Yacoub for Britney in November 1999.

(You didn't fall for that Louis Armstrong spoof ,now, did you?)

But never mind when it was written - some record companies DO hqve songwriters on their staff, although indeed most of them employ them through publishers or through producers they hire.

I'm terribly sorry if I simplified things here.

You make it sound like record companies have songwriters on their staff. You understand in the case of this song it was written in 1931 don't you?

Wrong. Often through a publishing company, but they certainly do.

Lots of, or in fact most record companies have a special "A&R manager" whose job it is to find the Artist some matching Repertoire.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, even if I prefer people writing thir own stuff.

It's simple. Singers like Britney have a record company who can afford to employ good songwriters, to provide their stars (who have limited ability in that direction) with material that is likely to chart when promoted in the right way.

Personally, I prefer bands and artists that write and perform their own material, but as Richard Thompson has shown here, some of those songs are actually well-written.

Whether you like Britneys version or not, that's a matter of taste. Or style. Or class :-)
