The HALFWAY HOUSE ORCHESTRA of New Orleans plays "New Orleans Shuffle" on Columbia # 541-D...recorded in New Orleans on Sept. 25, 1925.

Included in the group are Albert Brunies, cornet; Charlie Cordella, clarinet; Bill Whitmore, piano, Bill Eastwood, banjo; and Leo Addie, drums.

The tune was written by the orchestra's pianist, Bill Whitmore. Conducting is cornetist ALBERT BRUNIES, born 1900, who is seen in the 1910 photo as the tall kid in the center, holding his cornet. Incidentally, the little boy to the right is Abbie's brother George who, as an adult, played trombone with the New Orleans Rhythm Kings.

The Halfway House orchestra recorded for two companies, Columbia and Okey, between 1925 and 1928.

This cut is from a CD I purchased in New Orleans in 1996. It's probably still available from Jazz Oracle Phonograph Record Co., 25 Queensgrove Rd., Scarborough, Ontario M1N 3A9, Canada.

  • One of the best band of the roaring twenties indeed. Straight on my favourites and 5 stars. I hope you'll post some more and, if possible, Barataria which includes the last solo recorded by Leon Rappolo on clarinet.

  • I have Barataria and will post it sometime soon.

    Thank you for your interest.

  • @FlStudioUser yep, on the internet?

...if you want you can buy the cd from a site called "the jazz oracle"

  • is this the best quality it comes in?

  • Whadda ya mean, they don't sound white? They sound quite a bit like the NORK. And for good reason. Abbie Brunies turned down the job playing cornet and sent Paul Mares up to Chicago instead.
