Fall:

UKR 324 - Ukrainian Culture I - In this course, we examine Ukrainian culture in Ukraine and Canada with a focus on day to day life. We will concentrate on beliefs and values manifested in customs and spiritual culture as well as their transformations through time.

UKR 422 - Ukrainian Folk Songs - Take a look at one of Ukrainian folk culture's richest aspects, folk songs, and get exposed to major developments in traditional lyric and melody in the past and present. Topics include children's songs, educational songs, historical ballads, wedding songs, and more.

MLCS 204 - Forms of Folklore - Folklore is all around us. Humans naturally express themselves through stories, songs, toys, foods, festivals, jokes, dances and games. In this course we explore the many meanings of folklore in its traditional and modern forms.

INT D 439 - Ukrainian Dance - Have you ever wondered how Ukrainian dance evolved from a common village practice to a highly popular art form? How do the motivations for dancing affect the dance event? Great for experienced dancersand non-performers alike!

Winter:

UKR 325 - Ukrainian Culture II - Continuing from UKR-324, this course examines Ukrainian culture in Ukraine and Canada with a particular emphasis placed on art, community relationships, and cultural representations. Topics vary from Byzantine art to gender relations to the diaspora experience. Instruction in English.

UKR 423 - Ukrainian Folk Prose - Explore one of the richest aspects of Ukrainian folklore in this course, which addresses genres such as folk tales, narratives, and more. Brush up on your Ukrainian by examining foundational texts that have shaped Ukrainian-Canadian culture. Engage with the oral traditions of your own heritage with an exciting field work project! Prerequisite: UKR 303 or consent of instructor. Instruction in English.

MLCS 205 - The Study of Folklore - All is folk. Folklore is the academic study of culture as it is represented by everyday people and societies. This course explores the history of the study from its beginnings to current academic thought. In addition to examinations, students will engage in a collections project where they will analyze a piece of folklore. Instruction in English.

MLCS 405 - Contemporary Canadian Folklore - ake an in-depth look at the study of folklore, and explore the contemporary concerns of this ever evolving discipline. Working from recent Canadian scholarship, this course will identify key topics in the contemporary study of folklore, including the Internet, film, urban legends, sports, and more! Discover what makes folklore a unique and highly interdisciplinary field of study. Instruction in English.
