i'm curious ,are we supposed to want steerpike to suceed, is he meant to be the protagonist, obviously albeit a flawed one or is he in the novel the antagonist? or are we meant to root for him to be on the cusp of sucess, to see , yes he coukld have done it only for him to fail? anyway is he the hero or villain in this or the book, cant tell?

he is neither. I suppose you could say he's the villain, but everyone else are villains in there own ways too.

I think we're supposed to see steerpike as the only constant. Everyone else is duplicitous, stupid, ignorant, depraved, odd or inconsistent. He's the only stable centre character with a....goal?

@sumoni I think steerpike's lying when he says he wants equality. at least, in the book all he wants is power (for himself, fo course ^-^)

It's too bad Titus hates Steerpike, I imagine they would have got on. They both seem to hate what the family represents. Steerpike wants equality and Titus, wants freedom. I think maybe Titus hates Steerpike because he thinks he represents what he hates? Not to mention Steerpike has been naughty. I'm not sure, this is my first time seeing this.
