There has been a lot of discussion on whether or not using an iPad as an Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) makes sense or not vs. using paper charts by people that are not now flying with an EFB. I don't think this is the right question. In my mind, I think the right question is should you use an iPad EFB or not. Paper charts or some other form of back-up information are still necessary.
While not a tool to be used as a primary flight instrument, the iPad as an EFB makes a lot of sense to me. It makes it easier and faster to find information. It improves situational awareness and reduces workload. It is affordable to more pilots which means more pilots will have the option to use one.
In my opinion, if you have or can afford an iPad then you should learn and practice to use it as an EFB. Why? An iPad EFB does something that paper can never do and it might just save your life.
