In watching the Olympics, we can't help but notice the impact that "lopers" are having in freestyle. While high-rate freestylers and straight-arm freestylers have been getting the most attention this year for the speeds they've achieved, lopers are certainly making a HUGE impact.

  • I know I'm a couple years late on this video, but I'd like to say ever since I've started loping, my stroke has been a lot more powerful and consistent, it definitly helps my rotation, and I know for a fact I have more energy to keep on going. My coach said it herself that ever since I started messing with my freestyle it looks a lot smoother and powerful. To top it off I can keep up with the sprinters and pass my sister. xP

  • i agree. imo the "loping" that you see by good swimmers isn't this up and down motion most ppl think it is. I think it's just a result of their powerful, snapping hip rotation, combined with the kick. Plus, they have crazy flexible shoulders to maintain the high elbow which most people don't have.

  • Seems more like dropped elbow practice. Avoid.

  • if u notice. after a strong stroke, the swimmer dives about 6 inches under water. This way they reduce resistance and get more power in their stroke allowing them to swim smoothly.

  • This has helped so much, i am trying to make my stroke into more of a loper

  • ok, so loper is short for antelope... that's what I wanted to know, thanx

  • Ever seen an antelope run? it bobs kind of like that

  • yeah, I know the feeling... I was just wondering what the word originally meant

  • a swimmer who seems to bob up and down in the water during the stroke. A lot of swimmers feel that they get more power this way.

  • whats a loper?
