1st and 2nd for the new camera tryout. need practice with camera. should have filmed from other side of street, started recording too late and batteries went dead so couldnt do a 2nd one. note the puff of smoke at the end? on occasion, my secondaries hang open for a sec. not noticed on shift, but I shouldn't have put the clutch in so quick when I shut down.

  • are all 289's high performance?

  • @josemustang65

No. Less than 1% of 65-67 Mustang production had the HIPO engine. There was 3 versions of the 289: 2 barrel 'C' code, 4 barrel 'A' code, and then the 'K' code that had a larger solid lifter cam, larger 4 barrel carb, stronger connecting rods, high flow exhaust manifolds and some chassis changes like a 9" rear axle and higher rate springs. The HIPO also found it's way into the Fairlane and Comet.

  • How do these cars handle for being 40 years old? And what kind of mileage (mpg) do you get?

  • for a car of its day, the mustang handled pretty good. this one has what ford called the handling package, stiffer springs and a bigger sway bar. it is better with the radial tires. there are things you can do to one of these to bring it into the 21st century if you want. as far as mpg, 12 or so. but, I don't drive this for mpg.

  • Very Nice Stang! Love the color. I thought Hp 289's came with a 715 Holley carb? I'm a Camaro Buff but have always had a soft spot in my heart for the early stangs. And speaking from experience! I have had my share of seeing 65 to 67 Stangs tailights on a few late night street races Back in the late 70's & early 80's. A+

  • Thank you! The HIPO came with a 600 CFM Autolite 4V carb. The regular 4V car had a 480 CFM carb. When Shelby modified the cars, he used the Holley.

  • @rrttyy777 I feel sorry for you, just enjoy a beautiful piece of American muscle. Which cumaro would eat this, '86 with a 2.8? Hmm.Your Camaro? Do tell, sped.

  • now thats a mustang! love it

  • I like it. I too like the color. Don't you love that statement, " A Camaro would eat that...?" Very few "Cameos" have the panache a fastback Mustang sports. Fact.

  • that would be a great cruising car maybe even a every day car who knows

  • I have a 4 speed A code car, and I get over 15 city and about 22-23 highway.

  • Don't get me wrong I like Camaro's too but for being a mostly stock 289 engine that is over 40 yrs old very nice!

The 289 was one of the highest revving V8's of the muscle car genre. And they put it in one of the lightest cars they made! this ended up with a sleeper car that pulled through the 1st and 2nd gears, the big block cars wouldn't catch up till further down the road.

  • my '66 fatsback has a 4-speed manual but it's a 200ci 6cyl, the manual makes up for it though and i get better mpg out of it, i hope to get it done by this summer, but there's alot more i need to do to it before i can take it out for a spin

  • Yeah sounds like you drive it pretty hard to get 12 mpg.. my dads 71 gto with a 455 gets around 10 or 12.. Enjoy your mustang..
