  • I was raised in a traditional "Brethren Assembly" (with head coverings and lace doilies ) and we had the "Lord's Supper" every Sunday morning ("as often as ye meet") as its own formal service of remembrance and prayer. Any idea where my brand of Brethren (open Brethren) came from in relation to Brethren in Christ, Brethren Church, and Church of the Brethren? They all seem somewhat different (Brethren in Christ is very different from the Brethren Assemblies) and yet carry the same name.

  • @kruszer The "Brethren Assemby" is unknown to me. I am not familiar with their denomination. There are many denominations that use "Brethren" in their name that are not descendants of the German Dunkards. In fact, there is a radical group in California that call themselves "The Brethren" who are really a dangerous gang. I wish I could be more help, but you could probably find some information on-line to help you.

  • What's the difference between the Brethren Church and the Church of the Brethren, apart from inverting the names?

  • @polarphilately Theologically there is practically no difference between these two denominations. Back in the 1800's there was a split between two factions within the church. One group was more progressive and the other group wanted to remain unchanged. Today, you can barely distinquish between the two. I was raised in the Church of the Brethren and today belong to the Brethren Church.

  • @danielzigler Thanks for the explanation. It causes me to wonder why the two denominations don't just merge back into one again.

  • @polarphilately I've wondered the same thing myself (smile).

  • I was taken slightly back that you thought that using pictures of Christ in the video (as a man on earth) was related to the worship of idols and graven images of things in Heaven. We do not worship idols, angels or any images of "God" and do believe in the 2nd commandment. We believe that God sent his only son to earth in the form of Jesus Christ. We celebrate his earthly ministry and gift of redemption, salvation through his sacrifice on the cross and resurrection.

  • Women who wear the head covering is an old world tradition that can be traced back to the original dunkards who lived primarily in Germany. Is related to both prayer without ceasing, but a show of humility to cover their hair, probably braided, that might be considered vanity. In the U.S. there are several different denominations of Brethren and only a few still wear the head covering. You will find this head covering tradition most prevalent among the Amish and Mennonite.

  • I think there are several Brethren churches in the U.K. Thank you for sharing this video. Your group is very interesting because we do share some similar views.

I keep wanting to ask a Brethren lady why they wear the head-coverings all the time. I can understand wearing them at church, but is it related to "Pray without ceasing"? Or is there some other reason?

Also, do you not believe in the Second Commandment (per "images of Christ" in this video)? I ask just plainly, not accusatively.

  • there are so many brethren churches in Malaysia
