this song was written by a guy by the name of Bascom lamar Lunsford. there are various other songs that he wrote that would later become popular in the folk realm, bluegrass, and even some country. This song in particular is probably his most well known song, because of the likes of stringbean and grandpa jones taking this song and really putting it out to the public.
