After Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's announcement that he will not run for re-election, President Obama spoke briefly Tuesday evening at the White House.

He said that Mubarak acknowledged in a phone call that the status quo in Egypt cannot be maintained. President Obama said that the recent events in Egypt must lead to fair and free elections, and that the transition must be peaceful.

Even though many questions about Egypt's future remain unanswered, the U.S. remains committed to maintaining a strong partnership, he said.
