Over the past few years got out of running... two kids within a year, aging, changes in my body... I was surpirsed when I tried to go back to running and how hard it was. Thank you for your insights and simplistic approach to the runner basics.

@littlemissxxx3 Have you considered a custom orthotic to help support the arch? There are two types of shin splints; ones that occur on the front of the shin bone and ones that occur on the inside of the shin bone, called Tibialis Anterior tendinitis and Tibialis Posterior tendinitis. In each case, it is caused by the muscle/tendon over working. If over working muscles is the culprit, then quite often the mechanics of how your foot interacts with the ground is the reason

If you get shin splints from running something is definitely wrong. Shin splints happen from toe to heel sports not heel to toe.

I had a lot of shin splints, from age 6-14. and they finally just stopped one day, and I went on to running about 30 miles a week. For me, it was actually more of an issue of nutrition- I was not getting enough to support growth and healing. Once I started eating more, and finally ate meat around 15, felt a difference within a month.

What a mine of information. I manage a guy who is running 100 marathons in 100 weeks and I am training to join him on the last ten. I am a mid foot runner but three stone overweight. Got an interior splint and need to keep training.

@littlemissxxx3 i have extremely low arches (flat feet) and get shin splints almost immediately into a job :P

Just one question: I have extremely high arches, and I can get shin splints from Just a quick jog. Any tips?

Strength and Conditioning is always over looked because of the fear of getting slower.I think if more runners knew the right rep scheme and periodization models they would understand that it has huge implications! What stinks is that when they do get into the gym they either don't know what to do or u have an ACE,NASAM certified personal trainer who doesn't know what they are doing who injures them.Nice job on discussing knee valgus.Thats a huge problem w/ runners mainly bc of a weak glut med!!

Obviously barefoot running or doing anything barefoot is not smart and very dangerous: the glass, metal, splinters, oil, chemicals, dog mess and disease, etc. Why let ones skin touch any surface unecessarily, except when at the sandy beach, of course? I cannot understand how women wear just a thin sandals in a crowded train at rush hour. They need a big burly construction worker with boots to mash their toes. I hate to see womens flat bare feet. 5 inch heels - that's different. I love this.
Characters ran out lol.
Question: Is it bad when running on asphalt? I heard that running on asphalt can cause knee problems, even when landing on your foot correctly? I go running every mondays and fridays for 5 Km distance and the distance is like 2,5 Km asphalt and 2,5 Km gravel ( dirt like, no stones ). I know 5 Km is not much, but its just beggining for me, lol. Thanks!

@MarkusAir2000 Definitely harder surfaces create more stress. Ideally, we should be running on grass.

Thanks for the video! Awesome tips.
I also got one question and some tips.
Tip ( I may be wrong, im not an expert, but this helps me ) : Before running walk briskly, well not very briskly...lets say, medium. Also after you run, dont fly yourself on the ground because it was a hard run..After you run, walk briskly for 5 minutes also. What this does, this helps heart relax muscles and...does alot of good things. Also falling down to rest after a big run CAN cause heart attack, but Im not sure.

@MarkusAir2000 That's pretty much doing a warm-up and then a cool down. Thanks for your input.
