  • I used a piece of Dupont Tyvek as a ground sheet for my tent when I Thru-Hiked the Appalachian Trail. It lasted the whole way and I still have he same ground sheet. Can you say that for a ground sheet made out of any other material that is this light weight?

  • @mechanicmike69 How much does it weigh per unit area? What kind of experience did you have with it to suggest it is not as waterproof as silnylon?

  • @BrokenAeroVT It weighs 1.8 oz a square yard. The waterproofs-ness was when I used it as a stuff sack as the seams and thread holes are harder to seal with Tyvek than they are with silnylon.

  • Good video! This stuff is wonderful for primitive camping. I used to roll old shower curtains in my pack for waterproof shelter, but they weigh a ton. TYVEK is paper thin, paper light, and just as waterproof. No great insulation quality, but a 9'x20' sheet will make a good WEIGHTLESS teepee which you can build a one-hand fire in. TYVEK is fire retardant, snag proof, reusable, cheap and keeps the elements off you. Strong enough for a dragbag or rain collector. Who cares what it says in the woods?

  • @mechanicmike69 So the material itself is as waterproof in your opinion? How did you attempt to seal the seams? Tape? Some kind of liquid seam seal? Maybe there is a better bonding agent designed for polyethylene than sealers intended for nylon? I wonder if Dupont recommends something?

  • It sure would be nice if it came in woodsy colors instead of stark white. The only other color I've seen is black.
