Surprisingly, both sides had wrought iron bolts that used a pretty modern AP nose point, but lacked the ogive streamlining point cover. The Confederate Bolts were made for their larger guns and tested against their own sloped armor for penetrations and could easily defeat 6" of Wrought Iron/structural steel in most of their rifles over 30#. It is obvious that they would be too weak to harm a MBT, but I am not too sure about hard steel vs a Bradley, especially the up armored versions.

@JagdtygerII Back then they just had shell, shrapnel, or what was used against stone forts or something that had to be knocked down they would use a bolt, the same thing as solid shot but for a rifled gun which could penetrate more with its high velocity for the time period. The bolt might be able to penetrate something with light armor like an APC but if it had sloping armor it would just bounce off.

But damned if I know anyone who would let a bunch of Black Powder Cannon buffs shoot up their APC or Tank :)

@JagdtygerII Depending on the type of armor used against and the projectile used - some -might- penetrate, some might not. It's more of a mix-and-match scenario.

On a tank, I would agree with you, but most APCs are armored with less than 20mm of any kind of armor and the earliests rifled guns like the Parrott had as much energy as early WWII anti tank guns. So I was curious about how the APC did since its armor was only designed to defeat small arms and shell fragments.

@JagdtygerII Hitting modern armor with cast-iron ordnance from 1861 won't really do anything, unless they use shaped charges :-)

I have seen several other videos of Civil War Cannons firing on what looks like an APC. What I would like to know is how well the APC stood up to the hits by the 10, 12, 20 and 30 pdr rifled guns. This is something that the Alternate History Fiction Writers fail to mention. Does anyone know how well modern Armored Vehicles would fare?
