Will Wright, most known for The sims and simcity announced shortly after the release of The sims 2 that he was working on a new game, a masterpiece of course.
His new game would feature a ton of game modes worthy of being their own games, the most complex character creator tool ever and a living breathing world
filled by creatures made by you and other people all over the world.

Well does it hold up to the expectations? Let's find out!

Spore consists of 5 game modes all part of a singleplayer experience, there's the cell mode, the creature mode, the tribe mode, the civilization mode and the
space mode.

The cell mode has you make a cell and controll it through a tiny drop of water. You can either be a predator or simply eat of the plants. By eating you grow
bigger and it's satisfying to, as a predator, eat the cell that was so annoyingly big just a few moments ago.
It's the most original of the bunch which is a shame as it's the shortest one too.
The most hectic moments of it would probably be when you're relaxing and all of a sudden a bigass monster apear from nowhere and devour you!
Both the cell mode AND the creature mode shares a "call for partner" button which, when pressed, shows you to a partner and let's you develope the cell
further adding spikes, eyes, different mouths and more.
Each editor is more advanced than the previous one and so the cell creator only lets you add a few parts in a 2D dimension whilst later editors let's you
work in 3D with all kinds of parts.
The parts you add changes the creature vastly, the spikes deal dammage on inpact, the poison kills enemies from a distance and eyes let's you see further.
To add parts to your collection you simply collect them from dead big enemies or rocks.
When you feel ready just click the button in the buttom right corner to advance and add legs to your now 3D creature.

The creature mode plays alot like the MMORPG's out there where you either kill or be killed, or why not dance a little and be friends with the other races?
Screw that, it's alot more fun destroying them until they are extinct. It's the mode you'll have the most fun with, no doubt about it!
The creatures on the planet lives in nests and work together. Not counting the normal creatures there are also Alpha creatures, which have higher health and
babies which have lower health. There are eggs which may be destroyed for XP and cacoons that transforms into creatures.
By searching ribs all over the planet you may unlock new parts like arms, legs, hands, feet, mouths, eyes, wings, spikes and more.
By befriending the other creatures you can make them your allies and after unlocking the option to you can add them to your little squad and they'll follow
you around, socialize and fight alongside you as well as defend when dangerous creatures are around.
There are Wild creatures with alot of HP and then there are also the Epic creatures, large monsters with 1000HP and they cannot be befriended.
If you run into one you're lucky if you survive so you'd better stay away from them.
Just like in the cell mode, here you may also spend some time with a partner and furhter develope your creature.
Creating your character is a fun process and deffiently holds up to the expectations! You see how different he is now from before? It's a whole new character. (yes I couldn't fit it all in)

  • @Ilikefrogsandmonkeys Thank you! :)

  • Spore is a nice game but I agree that the game modes are a bit thin on their own.

    Good review! ;)
