my first successful attempt at building a tesla coil. its taken a few years to obtain the parts and make time for it, but our first ever trial run was great!
it was originally designed for a 15kV oil burner transformer, but this didnt work, so i eventually sourced a 5kV 36mA neon sign transformer, £25 on ebay, and tweaked the cap bank to suit.
to the nerd stuff, its got a mmc cap bank, four parallel sets of 18, 0.1uF 1000v caps in series giving 0.022uF. static spark gap, secondary coil 270m of 0.3mm copper wire wound onto a 70mm former 355mm high, giving a 5:1 height to width ratio. primary is flat 8mm Cu plumbing pipe tapped at about 4.75 turns.
next phase will be refining it, better spark gap, toroid for top and try a different primary coil.
i'm pleased with the initial tests!!!
