Justin was born in San Antonio August 20, 1935, first child of Elaine and Ernest Tubb, and started pretty soon to sing with his Dad on KGKL radio (San Angelo -- Tx), KGKO (Fort Worth -- Tx) or on the Grand Ole Opry. When his parent divorced, he was back in San Antonio with his mother and for the next four years or so he only saw his dad regularly in summers. In 1952, he entered the University of Texas in Austin and organized a small dance band with his cousins, Doug and Billy. They used to hang out at KVET radio (Austin) with Jerry Green who had, in 1953, two records on the short " Specialty" Hillbilly serie. Justin also started to write songs that raised interest from Little Jimmy Dickens and his dad who recorded "My Mother Must Have Been a Girl Like You" (Decca 9-28067). His main influence was not his Dad but Hank Williams and one of his first song was "Hank, It Will Never Be The Same Without you" recorded by his Daddy (Decca 9-28630). Dropping out of college before the first year was up, Justin took his first fulltime professional job at WHIN (Gallatin -- Tn), as DJ and sometime singer, where he stayed from May 1953 to October 1954. During that time, Decca record producer Paul Cohen liked Justin's vocal work on song demos that he was submitting.

A first session came in August 5, 1953 and was set at the Castle Studio in Nashville with Harold Bradley (gtr), Bud Isaacs (stl gtr), Lightin' Chance (bs), Tommy Jackson (fdl) and Owen Bradley (pno). "Ooh La La", issued on Decca 9-28865, is a great French number song that carries the spirit of Hank Williams or Tibby Edwards. Later, Justin admitted he was trying to use all the French he learned at the University of Texas. Another song unissued then, "Give Three Cheers For My Baby", is a good hillbilly ditty. Next session in Dec 1, 1953 with almost the same personnel produced "Somebody Ughed on You" and "Something Called the Blues".

In April 27, 1954, Justin was back on studio to cut a song co-wrote with Eddie Hill "I'm Looking for A Date Tonight" issued on Decca 9-29169 and "You're The Prettiest Thing That Ever Happened to Me", that stayed in the vaults, maybe being to close of his Daddy's style.

Imperial.
