Dread locks can be maintained using only a crochet needle. Maintenance can be done by yourself or by someone else. Note: the smaller the crochet needle, the tighter the locks.

The needle should poke into or through the base of the hair so that the hook of the needle pulls little loops out. This is done while the other hands index and thumb is pinching the section being poked. Twist the hair being pinched and keep poking the needle in making loops. Focus on making the dread lock look even unless lumps are intended. This style was learned in Bangkok Thailand.

  • i just started growing my dreadlocks and i use a crochet needle to maintane them , but dear god it hurts when i do the roots xD

and how can she have so many dreads and so thick ?!?!

i have 45 and they are normal size , nor thin nor fat :D

    i so envy her ... :)

  • You might be going to close to your scalp. Locing with this method does should not hurt.

  • How do u take care of the loose hairs around dreads!!?? Or and curl dreads

  • This is exactly how we take care of loose hairs. Just know that this clean style will usually always have a few loose hairs that are popping out of the loc

  • so i see that you are in seattle, im about an hour away. would you do maintanence, like a one time thing and show how to use the needle? i usually palm roll, but ive got a good amount of loose hairs if so, how much would that cost?

  • Send me a personal message and I'll let you know how much I would charge.

  • @damnthosepussycats My dreadlocks are even a it thicker and i have 63 dreadlocks :P It really depends on the person :)

  • Am i the only person who thanks she blinks ALOT!

  • @supaman214 It's great! For some reason we black people have got it in our heads that our race created dreadlocks.

  • my crochet hook gets stuck inside the dread when I try to pull it out, I just cant get the hook to do what I want it to

  • This is the first time that I have actually seen loc maintenance done on someone of non-African descent and they actually form a nice round cylinder. They look really good. I am amazed. Blessings.

  • i have a question? is there a place that you would recommend to me to go to in new york that does this method

  • Hello, I know this video is old, but I just got locks with the backcombing method and I have so many flyways, and it looks so messy. The beautician told me that's just how it is and there is nothing I can do to fix it, I would have to wait until they fully lock. I saw your method and I got the crochet 1mm and one that is 1.8mm. I am trying but it is not working at all. Is there a salon in NYC that does this method? Thank you.

  • @supaman214 well what would be your solution. To me, no matter what method of locing you use, especially for straight hair, it WILL BE time consuming and very necessary for the person who wants it done. Shouldn't post blanket stated comments without a solution to go along with it.
