One article I read on Euclid described his geometry as a "metaphysical two way street", allowing one to go from the physical world to the metaphysical and back again etc. Euclid was a Platonist and his geometry fits well with Plato's Theory Of Forms, which to Plato wasn't a theory but a reality.
