Hypothermic kite surfer rescued by Crosshaven RNLI

A kitesurfer had a very lucky escape last night (19/7/11) as he was spotted in the failing light drifting out of cork harbour after he was unable to raise his kite out of the water. At 9.45pm last evening (Monday) a member of the public spotted that the surfer was in serious difficulties and alerted the Coast Guard rescue centre who immediately requested the launch of the Crosshaven lifeboat with volunteers Gary Heslin, Vincent and denis Cronin on board. In conjunction with the Crosshaven Coast Guard unit, the surfer was soon spotted and taken aboard the lifeboat. The casualty was suffering severe hypothermia after being in the water for over an hour and was attended to by the lifeboat doctor dr John murphy, before being removed by ambulance to hospital. As there was confusion as to whether a second casualty was in the water, the lifeboat returned to the area and carried out an extensive search before being satisfied there were no other persons involved.
