The Power of Atmospheric Pressure
by Tom Moskowitz & Marina M. 2012
The weight of the earth's atmosphere creates a pressure on everything around us. (63 N/square cm / 14 lb /sq. in.) Atmospheric pressure holds the cardboard in place and prevents the water from leaving the glass. There is one more thing to consider in this demo. When the glass is turned upside down, some of the liquid leaks out and reduces the air pressure inside the glass so that is is less than the prevailing atmospheric pressure.
