Try the Magicians and the Boomerang Monkeys. The Boomerang Monkeys upgrade the speed path all the way including the ability. They are about 2k (maybe 1.5k) and they are better than laser monkeys and maybe as good as plasma. The Wizard is great both paths.(Mostly the fire path in later waves though.) The fire beam is better than the plasma monkey and cheaper to. The lightning attack is pretty beast as well in the mid rounds. The typhoon is good. Haven't done level 4 upgrades yet for them though.
