1994 - French Historical Drama from director Patrice Chéreau's adaption of Alexander Dumas's novel (La Reine Margot), starring Isabelle Adjani, Daniel Auteuil, Jean-Hugues Anglade, Virna Lisi, Pascal Greggory, Miguel Bosé, Asia Argento, Jean-Claude Brialy. Adjani plays Queen Margot who amidst a religious war (1572) between Catholics and Protestants is forced into a political marriage by her brother, King Charles IX of France ( Jean-Hugues Anglade) to King Henry of Navarre (Auteuil). Adjani is dazzling as the beautiful and insatiable Queen Margot and the production design and costumes are sumptuous, however, the movie is slow going and confusing unless you are well versed in the historical background. Previously made as La Reine Margot 1954 starring Louis de Funès. Nominated for Academy Award Costume. Adjani was snubbed for her leading role when Virna Lisi, as supporting actress (Margot's mother, Queen Catherine de Midici, won the Cannes for Best Actress. Director Patrice Chéreau won the Cannes Jury Prize.
