The plot of this opera by Umberto Giordano is set during the French Revolution.

The French poet Andrea (André) Chénier is deeply hurt by somewhat playful attitude of the young noblewoman Maddalena (Madeleine) de Coigny. He passionately narrates about the great famine and poverty he witnessed in the streets of Paris, as well as the hypocrisy of the priests who are insensible towards the needs of the poor. Then he addresses Maddalena directly, begging her not to despise the words of a poet, and urging her not to scorn Love, for Love is the divine gift, and the soul, as well as the life of the universe. („O giovinetta bella, d'un poeta non disprezzate il detto! Non conoscete amor? Amor, divino dono, non lo schernir! Del mondo anima e vita è l'Amor! O beautiful maiden, do not despise the words of a poet! Don't you know love? Love, divine gift, do not scorn it! Love is both the soul and the life of the universe!)

You are going to hear the impassioned, ardent interpretation of this aria by the unjustly underestimated Italian dramatic tenor, Bruno Prevedi, whose way of singing reminds me somewhat of the great Franco Corelli.

Enjoy!

  • Thank you so much for expanding our knowledge of a great yet under-appreciated artist. This is a rendition to rank alongside those by Caruso, Gigli and Corelli and it's not an exaggeration. There is a nobility and penetrating inner fire that are deeply impressive.

  • @dantitustimshu Yes, indeed, in my opinion as well, his is the rendition that is comes closest to Corelli's! I find it so very passionate, heartfelt and moving! It is clear that he profoundly feels each and every word!

  • yes, I agree with billthaxton. Corelli was unique but like Vladimir Horowitz he followed his own rules and did whatever he wanted in terms of distorting the music and a lot of times it was convincing enough.

  • Prevedi reminds me of Corelli in terms of passionate portrayal and deep involvement in the character, as well as in terms of their dark, rich, baritonal timbre. But I understand you.

  • An excellent voice.....very dynamic and a lovely tonal quality! TY!

  • Thank you. I am so glad you recognize his artistic worth. And thank you for subscribing to my videos. I am really honoured! :)

  • he has been one of my favorite tenors since i discovered him twenty years ago. this makes me cry every time i hear it.

  • Oggigiorno quest'uomo sarebbe il RE incontrastato dell'intero panorama lirico-operistico internazionale.

    BRAVISSIMO !!!

    Grazie !

  • Wonderful! Prevedi sings on my 1968 live Scala recording of Don Carlos and he is fantastic there too!

  • Maestro Prevedi's performance brings tears to my eyes because his interpreta-

tion is so deeply felt, passionate, exciting and respectful of the poetry of the

words. His voice is as beautiful as I have ever heard it...lyrical and dramatic,

a sensitive reading of Chenier's elegant and evolved character! Giordano's

writing is utterly inspired in this romantic and soulful aria! The closed captions

are always so helpful and appreciated! Thank you, Mirna! Bravo!!!

  • Certainly an underestimated voice. Thank you for sharing, Mirna, its wonderful.

  • This is splendid, rich and unforced singing. Brava Mirna for your excellent postings and for helping to restore recognition of this very fine tenor.

  • He sings this so powerfully--bravissimo davvero qui.
