Procedure to form an impenetrable oil barrier. Suggested for use in the April 2010 Gulf Oil Spill. Sensitive environmental areas do not have to be affected ......

  • Good idea.....let's put 4 oil booms in a row with varying depth skirts....that'll stop it for sure. We barely have the resources to get 1 line of boom out there on the coast and properly deployed.

  • @bizzofaction It is known that a single boom will not prevent oil from coming through, because of drainage failure at 1 knot water speed. The practice in the nineties was to use two booms in tandem. The improved procedure here is to make it very difficult for the oil to enter the marshes in Louisiana for instance, and other precious, sensitve environmental resources. Yes, there is not enough resources to protect all areas this way. A single boom gives a false sense of security, unfortunately.

  • Nothing is impenetrable

  • @iverson7x You are very perceptive. Anything that escapes would be because the practical application of the procedure is probably less than ideal. The procedure has been tested in modelling studies as well as the prototype has been experimentally tested.

The procedure described here sure beats the single conventional boom! Some resources just cannot tolerate being oiled! So why not do the best we can in the first place.

  • It is a good suggestion to protect Florida, rather than to try to stop drilling in Cuba.

  • You can use your patented oil boom to prepare for any accidental spills from oil drilling in Cuba.

  • I think there is an interesting fact that both winning teams of the X-Prize Oil Spill in 2011 are evolutionary instead of revolutionary. The revolutionary fluid mechanical aspects of Travelking111's patent shown in the current video should be better appreciated.

  • Even though the X-prize has been awarded, your invention is worthy of developmental funds because it accomplishes a task not addressed by either the first or second X-prize winners. The one is for skimming oil and the other is for fast collection of oil in open waters. Your invention is meant to fully protect the environment from spilled oil. It is quite apparent that all 3 objectives and purposes (the 2 X-prize winners and yours) are similar, but very different in the field.

  • Very interesting idea. I think this could really revolutionize how a boom system could contain oil and I am surprised this hasn't already been mass-produced!

  • The industry should recognize your contribution. This is one year after the Gulf oil spill. Some smart company should sign up to be the sole manufacturer and whole sale distributor of your patented containment boom. This is so important now that deepwater drilling has resumed in the Gulf.

  • I am convinced. This should be the gold standard for containment oil booms.

  • The oil barrier method in this video is practical and effective. The use of a deceleration barrier and multiple sets of booms eliminates the problem of oil flowing over a single layer of boom (conventional method) and harming the environment. This method should be incorporated into oil spill response plans so that we are prepared to protect the environment and its precious resources.

  • Oh, you should win the X-prize!
