iDIDJ Australia strives to uncover and promote talent in the 'Top End' of Australia whenever we find it and this YouTube clip represents yet another milestone: the first didgeridoo from Goulburn Island to be showcased on the internet.

This mago was made by Mawng clansman Micky Yalbarr, a resident of Warruwi on Goulburn Island. Yalbarr is affectionately known as 'Moonlight' by family though I am not sure how the nickname came about. He is Gamarrang' skin and a recognised mago player of repute. He is also a fascinating dancer to watch. Check out this clip of Yalbarr dancing with fellow Goulburn Islanders during a Mamurrung ceremony I recorded in 1996:

Mago playing by Micky Yalbarr (and singing by countrymen) was recorded by Dr Linda Barwick at the end of 2006 as part of the Western Arnhem Land Song Project funded by Hans Rausing Endangered Languages Project (HRELP).

This rare Goulburn Island mago is an iDIDJ Australia exclusive which you can find in the iDIDJ Store:

  • I enjoyed this video. Would like to see an interview with one of the residents of Goulburn Island - to see what life is like there. Keep up the good work - Dave
