Great video - this is my second year winter sowing. I'd say I get about 80% or higher germination. I re-use the pots I buy plants from the garden center in and gallon sized zip lock bags from the dollar store. I use buck a bag potting soil also. Seems to me the key is growing anything that would grow perennially in your area, or any annuals with hard seeds that need nicking or cold stratification. :)

Thanks for this great tutorial. We are looking forward to starting some seedlings for the first time this year!

I tryed this last year I only got one plant but I put them into cups then into the milk jugs and didnt put holes in the bottom.... What kind of tomtoes did you sow?
Thanks for the video I'm going to try this again this year...
I'm just wondering, do you cover the openings of your milk jugs and other containers? Some things for winter sowing basically say to keep them sealed ("Keep them sealed or else!" basically), but it sounds like others don't bother and I'm wondering what you do. It seems like cutting off the air supply would just make things rot, but I've never winter sown before so I don't know. Could you comment on this, please?
The hole punch idea is a great one! I'll definitely have to try that.

The caps for the milk jugs get thrown away...(the rain/snow gets to the dirt thru the opening) and if you use a plastic takeout container, then you use the cover or cover it with saran wrap, but make sure you put lots of holes or slits in the top and bottom. The containers stay covered until the seeds sprout in the spring. Then you start to open them up ie: take off saran wrap or plastic cover or with the milk jugs, open it on the hinge! Happy WS'ing!

Hey Guys! Thanks for all the comments... get out there and WS! Some seeds germinate, some don't (my success rate is 4 or 5 out of 10! I've tried "Brandywine" tomatoes and they did great!
Winter Sown is now on FACEBOOK.. just signed up a few days ago! Isn't that great!
Once again, thanks... I'm glad you guys found it helpful.

Is there anything you have consistantly had poor germination results with?
I tried to grow Money Plant from seed last spring with 0 results...maybe this would work for them.

Very Tender annuals.. i don't even try them. (but petunia, snapdragons..those guys work in WS'g)
day lillies... never have gotten a sprout w/WS'g, then i tried 'fresh' seed, indoors on the windowsill in a little baggie of moist perlite... everyone of them sprouted!
Clematis, roses + several others... takes forever and I don't wait past June for the sprouting to happen. But Coneflower, Mallow family, white datura all work. I am trying Money Plant this winter, hope it works! J.
