After many years out of use, and a two year restoration carried out by the RPSI, Great Southern & Western Railway (GSWR) steam engine No. 90 arrives at her new home on a grey September afternoon. And a rare sight at Downpatrick - two engines in steam as RH 'Harvey' Smyth comes to help get off her low-loader.

  • how do you get a job at such a railway?

  • You join the society and become a volunteer!

  • I was with you until the Thomas the Tank Engine music.Cruel touch for any steam enthusiast who had kids grow up watching the show- but kudos on the restoration.

  • C'mon! It's a bit of fun!! She's a wee dinky engine!!! And kiddies to Downpatrick *always* talk about Thomas (well, their parents do!!!)

  • Same here in the States. The biggest event at our local railway museum is the annual "Day Out With Thomas"- it draws thousands of visitors and raises a lot of money for restoration projects-which clearly is a good thing.

And of course, if it gets kids interested in trains-the non-anthropomorphic kind- it will pay off even better in the future: passing on a universal passion for these wonderful machines.

  • My God, Downpatrick looks a pithey place!!!
