Wow, that's actually a great idea. Especially since opal is essentially natural glass. Same hardness.. Neat..

This is one of my favorites; I'd love to be wearing it. Jeanne

Nice, what do you do? Inlay the opal in Onyx? You should try some black jade for more stability and strength. Much tougher to carve out and polish but worth the effort- it'll last much longer.

Thanks for your comment, actually I do use black jade from time to time but with this piece as in most of my work I have used jet black leadlight glass. It takes a beautiful polish and has a hardness of 6 to 6.5 and is very durable once one understands how to cut it.

How thick is the opal in your pieces? it looks like a rather generous amount.

Hi Yoni, depends on the piece. In smaller pieces the opal can range from .8mm to 1.5 mm approx., with larger pendants the opal can range up to 3 mm thick. Plenty of strength there. It also allows for the opal with the play of color to show itself as 3 dimensional.

I noticed that, it's very neat! If I ever open a shop I'll be sure to keep you in mind. Your work would look wonderful in a high end case.
