Though not the greatest duck lake in the area, you can always count on Dode to be ice-free 'til fairly late in the season. Notice the ice forming on the left-hand side of my decoy spread. As I made this video, the temperature had risen to a balmy 28 degrees. At the first hint of daylight, a couple small groups of divers came on the lake and left, but by sunrise there was really nothing going on.
I learned long ago that, even when the ducks are around in Northern MN, heading out on a bluebird day is generally not going to be very productive, but this was the only day open on my calendar that week, and the big freeze was not too far away.
